Hveragerði - Iceland
The Aquaform collections used in this project
Set within Iceland’s pristine ecosystem, Reykjaböð Hot Springs reinterprets the contemporary bathhouse by translating the primordial power of the earth into an essential, protective architectural language. The structural volume emerges as a monolithic extension of the geothermal landscape, combining textured concrete, native timber and highly resilient mineral surfaces designed to withstand the demands of the glacial climate, minimising heat loss while maximising the building envelope’s thermodynamic efficiency.
Within this highly sensitive landscape, the spatial layout moves beyond the fragmented logic of traditional wellness facilities to create a continuous, organic journey. Developed with the scientific and hydrotherapy consultancy of Katherine Connolly, the interiors shape a protected microclimate in which the geometry of the concrete and views towards the surrounding landscape remain in constant dialogue. The architecture channels steam, natural light and air currents through digitally controlled fluid dynamics, creating an immersive sequence designed to support circadian balance and encourage the guest’s autonomic response.
At the heart of Reykjaböð’s thermal sequence, Aquaform solutions from the Pluvia Collection redefine the cooling and thermal contrast phase through an immersive experience of progressive temperature reduction. Seamlessly integrated into the material architecture of the dedicated room, the system operates as a precision hydraulic platform capable of dynamically managing the gradual decrease in water temperature from the guest’s arrival through to the end of the cycle, avoiding abrupt thermal stress and guiding the body through a controlled descent in temperature.
Through its customised Pluvia configuration, water is precisely controlled to guide the body through a fluid transition from geothermal heat towards progressively colder microclimates. The modules deliver a dynamic sequence combining finely calibrated misting, enveloping rain at variable flow rates and laminar streams with progressive stimulation. By integrating timed thermal modulation with chromatic protocols and flow regulation, the Pluvia Collection transforms the body’s response to cold into a ritual of sensory stimulation and metabolic recovery, fully attuned to Iceland’s bathing culture.
