A Conversation with Diana Mestre on the Evolving World of Wellness, Emerging Trends, and the Future of Holistic Care

What is the distinctive feature of Mestre & Mestre in the Grand Velas Spa project?

As Mestre & Mestre Spa & Wellness Consulting, we played a crucial role in guiding the architectural design for the Grand Velas Spa, collaborating with the Ricardo Elias architectural firm. Our focus was on optimizing space layout, integrating hydrotherapy features, and adhering to international guidelines to create a world-class spa experience.

What innovative elements were included in the project, and how did you integrate new trends?

The central element of the spa is water, which we designed to provide a comprehensive hydrothermal experience. Despite spatial limitations, we introduced innovative features such as a sauna with infrared panel, an herbal steam room, a magnesium water treatment for the experiential pool, and Aquaform’s first Water Tunnel in Mexico.

Was sustainability a client requirement? If so, how did you address these needs in the project?

Yes, sustainability was a fundamental requirement. We incorporated the MagnaPool system, which is eco-friendly and based on a unique blend of magnesium and potassium minerals. This system is not only more sustainable but also gentle on the skin, offering a therapeutic swimming experience that soothes the skin, relieves muscle pain, and calms the nervous system, all while providing a low-cost, low-maintenance option.

Did the project feature distinctive cultural elements from the region? If so, what were they?

Grand Velas Resorts are renowned for their exquisite Mexican décor, expressed through art, fabrics, and traditional Mexican healing practices integrated into the spa design. This cultural integration enriches the overall wellness experience.

What role does SPATIUM, Aquaform’s sensory tunnel, play in this project?

The rain walk, featured at the Grand Velas Boutique Spa Los Cabos, is the first of its kind introduced in Mexico. While other projects are considering adding the Sensory Tunnel, the Grand Velas Boutique Spa Los Cabos represents the first spa concept to offer this extraordinary experience.

Ricardo Elias, principal of Elias and Elias Architects in Guadalajara, known for designing the renowned Grand Velas Resorts in Riviera Maya, Riviera Nayarit, and Los Cabos, was once again chosen as the architect for Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos.

This project was conceived to harmoniously integrate with the natural and varied landscape of its location. The Grand Velas Boutique extends towards the sea, offering spectacular and unobstructed views of the Sea of Cortez throughout the property. The iconic and sophisticated design fits within the finest Mexican tradition and enhances the setting. Mexican details are present throughout the environment, including cactus gardens that further enrich the experience.

Melin Castro received the Double Gold Medal Award for Interior Design at the Fourth International Forum of Women in Architecture and Interior Design for her work on the Grand Velas Resorts. The award recognizes the excellence of her design for the three hotels and the spa at Grand Velas Riviera Maya. Castro, who is also the President of MC Design and Creative Director for Velas Resorts, designed the spas at Grand Velas Los Cabos and Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos with award-winning and high-quality style.
